Abstract

Purpose: Age related macula degeneration results in thinning of the retina, which may lead to thinning of neuroretinal rim on the optic disk with the pseudoglaucomatous optic disk appearance. In this study, optic disk changes in patients with macula degeneration and the assosiation between each others, were investigated. Material and Methods: Thirty patients who were diagnosed as macula degeneration and 16 healty subjects as a control group, were included in the study. Patients were excluded if they had been diagnosed with glaucoma or were suspected to have glaucoma. All patents underwent optic disk and macula measurements with Optic Coherence Tomography during the same visit by same investigator. The extent of geographic atrophy or disciform scar was determinated with a disc area template as a referance. Results of analysis were compared with control group. Results: The eighty-four eyes of 46 subjects participating in the study, were measured prospectively macular and optic disc scans. The mean age were 72.33±1.8 in patient group, and 60.31±1.2 in control group. There were no significantly difference in the mean macular thickness, macular volume, c/d ratio and parapapillary nerve fiber layer thickness between patient and control group (respectively, p=0.064; p=0.087; p=0.056; p=0.445). There were no corelation between macular thickness and c/d ratio (r=-0.080; p=0.655). Of the 30 patients, 12 had five and/over disk area asymmetric macular degeneration area. In these patients, vertical c/d ratio was 0.53±0.15, 0.48±0.2 in other cases and 0.23±0.03 in control group. There was no significantly difference between two groups and no corelation between extent of degeneration area and c/d ratio. Conclusion: There is no relationship of macula degeneration and c/d ratio or peripapillary nerve fibre layer thickness.
