Abstract

PURPOSE: In this study, the results of trabeculectomy in patients who had primary open angle glaucoma with diabetes mellitus were investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The results of trabeculectomy were compared with 19 eyes of 14 patients who had primary open angle glaucoma with diabetes and 21 eyes of 18 patients who had primary open angle glaucoma without diabetes as a control group. RESULTS: In patients with diabetes, the mean preoperative intraocular pressure(IOP) was 32.09±13.59 mmHg, and the mean postoperative IOP was 12.27±1.66 mmHg. The difference between preoperative and postoperative IOP was significant (p<0.01). In patients without diabetes, the mean preoperative IOP was 34.48±12.44 mmHg, and the mean postoperative IOP was 12.62±10.78 mmHg. The difference preoperative and postoperative of IOP was found significant (p<0.01). When the groups were compared with the each other for age, sex, postoperative follow-up and preoperative and postoperative IOP, the mean difference was not significant (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: It was found that diabetes mellitus is not a risk factor for the success rate of trabeculectomy in patients with primary open angle glaucoma.
