Abstract

In this study, the dynamics of rockfall from a certain altitude has been examined and the speeds of impact of rocks with fences have been formulated by using the principles of the conservation of energy and linear momentum in order to design flexible fences for rockfall protection. Different modes of rockfall such as rolling, sliding and free falling have been separately examined, and the maximum of the speeds of impact obtained from each mode has been used as the design value. Considering plastic impact, the deformation, the equivalent static load, the bending moment, the shearing stress and the normal stress occuring in cantilever beams which constitute the skeleton of flexible fences have been obtained.
