Abstract

Aim: To compare the effects of behavioral, alarm-bed, and desmopressin treatments for primary enuresis nocturna. Methods: 98patients with primary enuresis were evaluat-ed by their medical stories, physical examinations and laboratory findings. The cases were randomly divided into three different treatment groups: behavioral therapy, conditioning treatment with alarm-bed, and 20-microgram desmopressin nasal aerosol treatment. Treatment duration was three months. The patients were controlled in the second week, the first, and the third month for evaluating the success of the treatment and also for the frequency of relapses at the end of the sixth month. Results: The frequency of enuresis in patients was more than three nights per week before treatment. Dry nights increased in all of the three groups after treatment. The groups using alarm-bed and desmopressin treatments were more successful than behavioral therapy and the difference was statistically significant. The percentage of complete cure was 29.0 %, 64.7 %, and 66.7 % respectively, as far as behavioral, alarm-bed, and desmopressin treatment groups were considered after three months of treatment. The relapse rates for the same groups were 33.3 %, 40.9 %, and 72.7 % after 6 months in the same order. Conclusion: The most effective treatment modality is the conditioning treatment with alarm-bed, with the lowest relapse rate.
