Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effects of hyperemesis gravidarum which is the first trimester complication with conflicting outcomes reported in the literature on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. Methods: Between October 2013 and January 2017, 170 patients with hyperemesis gravidarum diagnosed in our clinic and 791 patients with no pregnancy complications within the same time interval were retrospectively analyzed for demographic information, obstetric and neonatal outcomes. Results: The hyperemesis gravidarum group of pregnants had a decreased age and increased rate of delivering low-birth weight newborns relative to the control group. Rates of preterm birth and need for admiision to newborn intensive care unit were higher in the control group than hyperemesis gravidarum group. Although our results were different, a statistically significant difference between hyperemesis gravidarum and control groups.was not detected. Conclusion: Hyperemesis gravidarum, which usually heals without sequelae and is likely to affect the first trimester well-being of the mothers adversely, has no significant effect on birth and neonatal outcomes.
