Abstract

Objective: This research was planned to be conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional study on November 14, 2017 World Diabetes Day between 08.00 AM-12.00 AM at The University of Health Sciences of Istanbul Education and Research Hospital with 383 individuals waiting at the main entrance of the hospital, and volunteered to get free blood glucose measurement and other anthropometric measurements within the context of random diabetes screening, and to raise awareness about this disease. Method: For screening tests performed, 5 glucometers measuring capillary blood glucose from fingertips, 2 scales for measuring height - weight and a tape for measuring waist circumference. In addition, a data collection form developed by the researchers, in which the demographic information of the individual, blood sugar and other anthropometric measurements, the family story and his medical history are included. Results: Of the 383 participants who participated in the study, 64.7% (n=248) were female and the overall mean age was 50.3±12.9 years. Mean waist circumference measurements of the individuals were 96-105 cm in 105 (27.4%), and 86-95 cm in 101 (26.3%) individuals. The participants’ mean waist circumference was 93.8±13.8 cm. According to the body mass index (BMI) distribution, the mean BMI was 29.4±5.3 kg/m2 and participants were found to be in the overweight group. BMI values of men and women were not significantly different (p> 0.05). In males, waist circumference measurements and blood sugar values were found to be significantly higher than females (p<0.05). Myocardial infarction (MI) rates and the number of exercising individuals were significantly higher in males than females (p<0.05). Statistically significantly positive correlations were detected between age and BMI; age and waist circumference, and blood sugar (p<0.05). As a result of the screening, a total of 23 people with blood sugar values above 200 mg/dl and who had previously had diabetes mellitus were identified. Six out of 23 were women and 7 were male. Conclusion: According to randomized screening test performed to raise the awareness about diabetes, 23 individuals with diabetes were found and no individual could be considered as prediabetes. It is thought that regular screenings and raising awareness of the society through education are beneficial in preventive health services.
