Abstract

Ototoxicity is disruption of hearing-balance as a result of a drug or chemical substance that affects the inner ear functions negatively. Its clinical manifestations include hearing loss, tinnitus and/or vertigo. Drugs including platinum-based antineoplastic therapies, loop diuretics, aminoglycoside antibiotics most frequently cause ototoxicity; also radiotherapy and surgery involving the ear and auditory nerve are other possible etiologic factors. Genetic predisposition is very important in drug-induced ototoxicity. Hearing assessment with periodic audiograms during potential ototoxic treatment is the best protective method for patients. With early identification of hearing deficits, preventive, and therapeutic measures can be taken, with potential decrease in academic, language, speech, social and pysicosocial morbidities.
