Abstract

Aim: To analyze pubertal development and final height (FH) of type 1 diabetic children(IDDM) and investigate the influence of some factors. Methods: The records of 51 IDDM children (34 F, 17M) who were diagnosed in our clinic between 1970 and 1987 and followed longitudinally until the attainment of FH were reviewed. The degree of metabolic control was assessed by mean HbA1c level of each patient. Results: Height at diagnosis and FH was slightly below the national average standards. Height SDS was not different at diagnosis and at FH with respect to gender and pubertal status. There was also no difference between height SDS at diagnosis and FH. In prepubertal children, mean age both at the onset of puberty and peak height velocity (PHV) was retarded. PHV, height gain in puberty and FH were lower than that of normal children. Menarcheal age was delayed and height gain after menarche was lower. Target height (TH) of 32 children correlated with FH (p=0.017). Although, overall FH was greater than TH, only boys and pubertal patients were significantly taller. The difference in height SDS at diagnosis and FHSDS was negatively correlated with age of diagnosis (p=0.001), although not correlated with duration of diabetes and mean HbA1c values. Conclusion: Pubertal status or age of patient at diagnosis can affect FH. Onset of puberty and pubertal growth were delayed in diabetic children. On the other hand, FH was not different from TH and patients with pubertal onset of diabetes had better FH than TH.
