Abstract

Introduction: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the isolation frequency of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) from blood cultures and the characteristics of real blood stream infection. Materials and Methods: Between 1 January 2016 to 1 October 2016, 209 cases who were isolated CNS from blood cultures were investigated retrospectively. Data for analysis were recorded in SPSS 21 program. Results: A total of 209 isolates were identified; of these 54 (25.8%) were considered infection associated, and 155 (74.2%) were considered contamination. Staphylococcus hominis accounted for 48.4% of bacteremia cases, followed by Staphylococcus epidermidis (28.4%), Staphylococcus haemolyticus (11.6%), and Staphylococcus capitis (5.2%), Staphylococcus warneri (0.6%) and others (5.8%). In relation to the focus of infection 34 (63%) were primary bacteriemia, 15 (27.8%) were catheter related infections, 4 (7.4%) were surgical and one (1.8%) was prosthetic heart valve infection. The 28 days survival rate of patients with BSI was statistically lower. The mortality rate was higher in patents who were followed up the intensive care unit and septic shock. The final multivariate logistic regression showed that being intensive care unit patient ve septic shock were statistically significant risk factors for mortality due to CNS bacteremia. Conclusion: CNS should be considered in empirical treatment in intensive care unit patients with septic shock.
