Abstract

Aim: In this study HBV seroprevalance among children registered to Pediatric Department of Atatürk University Medical Faculty in Erzurum, was investigated. The serologic parameters of HBV were determined. Method: Between October 2001-July 2002, 482 patients, aged between 0-18 years old, without jaundice were investigated at the Pediatrics Department of Atatürk University Medical Faculty. The cases were grouped according to their ages as 0-12 months, 13-48 months, 4-9 years, 10-14 years and 15-18 years. The serologic parameters of HBV were determined with 3rd generation kit of ELISA method, in Microbiology Laboratory. Statistical analysis the were done by chi-square and Student's t test in the SPSS 9.0 version programme. Results: The male population was 50.6% and the female population was 49.4% of the whole subjects. HBV seropositivity rate of children was 39.3%. When HBsAg positivity of the whole subjects were examined, 8 of 482 cases (1.7%) were detected to be HBsAg (+). Age, parents' educational level and socioeconomic status were correlated with HBV seroprevalence (p<0.05). Conclusion: Importance of educational status of parents, necessity of public education and the need of seroprevalence studies were emphasized.
