Abstract

Sea level data collected at coastal tide gauges remain as one of the most essential parameters that serves to the wide range of applications of geosciences and maritime engineering. In order to provide correct, reliable, and continuous data to these applications (1) Some quality control procedures must be applied to the raw data collected from tide gauges (2) Quality checked observations and other metadata about the gauges must be stored in a database and managed properly. A two level quality control system and a data management system comprising of a relational database have been designed to perform near real time and delayed mode quality control of sea level and other ancillary meteorological data collected from TUDES tide gauges and to deal with these vast amount of data and information. The programs developed for the quality control can (1) perform near real time Level-1 and delayed mode Level-2 quality check, (2) perform tidal analysis of sea level data (3) generate statistics including extremes, daily and monthly means (4) visualize data in various formats, (5) implement common database operations such as insert, delete, update, and select. The database stores quality checked observations along with the metadata including site history records and documentation, datum information, GPS and leveling observations necessary for geodetic fixing of tide gauges.
