Abstract

Seasonal, inter-annual and long term mean sea level (MSL) variations in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea during 1992-2005 period are investigated by using satellite altimetry sea level anomalies (SLA), sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) and tide gauge monthly MSL data. The amplitudes of annual and semi-annul seasonal MSL variations determined at 992 altimetry grid points scattered homogenously along the Eastern Mediterranean Sea are found to be 3.0-16.6 cm and 1.8-3.2 cm respectively. Lowest amplitudes are observed at the Sea of Marmara whereas the largest ones are observed at Crete region. Seasonal MSL variations reach to its maximum in October-November and to its minimum in March-April. Phase angles are increasing depending on latitudes, and a two-month phase difference can be seen between the northern and the southern part of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. A significant change is observed in the SLA and SSTA trends along the Eastern Mediterranean Sea that took place in mid-1999 which has been corroborated by independent tide gauge data. The increasing SLA and SSTA trends begin to decline after mid-1999. In order to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of inter-annual MSL variations in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) and spectral analysis is applied to the detrended and deseasoned SLA and SSTA data at SLA and SSTA grid points. A periodical signal having a period of 10.3 year is detected in the time series of SLA first principal component explaining % 46.4 of the total variation of sea level and in the time series of SSTA second principal component explaining % 10 of the total variation of sea surface temperature in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Inter-annual variability of the Eastern Mediterranean sea level during the period 1992-2005 is mostly originated by inter-annual sea surface temperature variations according to the results of this study and the recent investigations in the Mediterranean Sea. Harmonic analysis of satellite altimetry SLAs indicate that long term MSL along the Eastern Mediterranean accordingly Sea of Marmara and Eastern Mediterranean coasts of Turkey is rising with a rate of 4-7 mm/yıl during 1992-2005 period.
