Abstract

We evaluated the neurophysiological findings of three siblings, (two males and a female aged 30, 34, 32 years, respectively) with hereditary hyperekpiexia (HH) or startle disease. EEG recordings revealed spike and sharp-wave paroxysms with anterior dominance in amplitude, and the amplitudes of cortical SEP were high. The latencies of R1 and R2 responses of blink reflex were bilaterally within normal ranges. Stimulation of the right median, right tibial, and left tibial nerves evoked a stereotypical reflex response extending from the orbicularis oculi muscle to the stemodeidomastoid, biceps brachii and tibialis anterior muscles. Our results were consistent with those of previous studies suggesting that both the jerks of hereditary hyperekpiexia and startle reflex share common pathways, that is, the motor part of the reflex arch, especially the pontomedullary reticular formation.
