Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated the clinical and laboratory features, and the course and prognosis of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). Patients and Methods: Eleven patients (10 males, 1 female; mean age 18 years; range 7-39 years) were diagnosed as having SSPE depending on clinical findings, EEG, and the detection of serum and cerebrospinal fluid antibodies to measles virus. Cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies were performed in five and six patients, respectively. Treatment included isoprinosine in all patients and sodium valproat in seven patients. Results: The presenting symptoms were behavioral changes, myoclonus, and ataxia in nine patients. Two patients manifested atypical presentation. The mean age of onset was 17.8 years. One patient had late onset at 39 years of age and rapid deterioration. Cranial imaging studies showed abnormalities in four patients. Mortality was rapid in two patients at four and eight months, respectively; the remaining patients survived between one and 12 years. Conclusion: It should be recalled that some forms of SSPE may be of late onset and with atypical findings.
