Abstract

This study comparatively examines changes observed in regional air traffic following the operational transition from Adana Şakirpaşa Airport to Çukurova International Airport in terms of flight intensity, destination diversity, and aircraft type distribution. The research was designed as a descriptive comparative single-case study without a causal claim. Data were compiled from EUROCONTROL flight records and official statistics from the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ). The observation period covers 1 January–31 December 2023 for Adana Şakirpaşa Airport and 11 August–31 December 2024 for Çukurova International Airport, beginning with commercial operations. Because the observation windows differ in length, raw flight totals were not interpreted as direct growth measures; instead, mean daily flight movements, distinct destinations, and aircraft-type shares were used as the comparative indicators. The findings show that Çukurova International Airport recorded higher daily flight intensity, a broader destination network, and a larger share of Airbus A321 operations during its operating period. These patterns suggest that additional airport capacity, together with airline network planning, frequency decisions, and fleet allocation, may be associated with structural changes in regional connectivity. However, unequal observation windows, seasonality, demand growth, and airline strategies are not controlled; therefore, the results should not be interpreted as causal effects. By documenting the early outcomes of a complete operational airport transfer within a capacity–connectivity framework, the study provides an empirical baseline for airport planning, performance monitoring and longer-term evaluation.
