Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between informational efficiency and the probability of extreme negative returns in the BIST 100 Index. The analysis uses daily BIST 100 closing data for the period from January 5, 2015 to March 12, 2026. Informational efficiency is measured using normalized Shannon entropy calculated for different rolling window and block lengths, while the probability of extreme negative returns is analyzed through logit models. In the main model, observations in the lower 1% tail of the daily return distribution are defined as extreme negative returns, whereas the lower 5% threshold is used for robustness analysis. Volatility and Amihud illiquidity are also included as control variables, and coefficient significance is evaluated using heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent HAC standard errors. The findings show that the coefficient of the entropy variable is negative and statistically significant in both the baseline and control-variable models. The robustness analysis based on the lower 5% threshold also indicates that this relationship continues under a broader definition of negative returns. Overall, the findings suggest that deteriorations in informational efficiency contain meaningful information about downside tail risk in the BIST 100 Index.
