Abstract
This article examines the transformation of defence and security relations between Türkiye and the United Kingdom from the Cold War period to the contemporary multipolar international environment. It analyses how bilateral relations have been reshaped through shared threat perceptions, NATO membership, regional crises, and changing geopolitical priorities. During the Cold War, the Soviet threat and the two countries’ positions within the Western alliance fostered a security-oriented rapprochement between Türkiye and the United Kingdom. In the post-Cold War era, developments such as the Gulf War, the Balkan crises, the interventions in Iraq, and the rise of international terrorism contributed to the redefinition of bilateral relations around new security dynamics. In the post-9/11 period, NATO operations, counterterrorism, energy security, and regional instability became the main areas of cooperation between the two countries. The United Kingdom’s support for Türkiye’s European Union accession process and the emergence of the “Global Britain” approach after Brexit also reinforced the strategic dimension of bilateral relations. Nevertheless, differing priorities regarding Black Sea security, Middle Eastern policies, and developments in the Eastern Mediterranean have continued to generate periodic divergences between the two sides. The article argues that although Türkiye–United Kingdom defence and security relations have not evolved into a fully-fledged bilateral security architecture, they have developed a flexible and functional pattern of cooperation shaped by NATO frameworks, regional crises, and defence-industrial collaboration. The study evaluates this transformation through British strategic documents, policy discourses, and foreign policy orientations by employing a historical process analysis method.
