Abstract
Calligraphic applications in mosque architecture constitute one of the principal forms of expression through which the tawhid-centred semantic world of Islamic art becomes visible. Mosque inscription sets consisting of the names of Allah, Muhammad, the Rightly Guided Caliphs, and Hasanayn form an important group of inscriptions in terms of both religious representation and architectural identity. This study examines the iconographic continuity, formal transformation, and architectural placement of mosque inscription sets from the Classical Ottoman period to the Late Ottoman period and contemporary examples in the Islamic world. The study employs epigraphic inventorying and visual content analysis; the inscriptions are comparatively evaluated according to their numerical form, architectural location, material, script type, and visual emphasis. The findings indicate that the eight-part inscription set became a dominant scheme in the Ottoman mosque tradition, while in contemporary mosques this scheme varies according to geography, design approach, and institutional preference. Consequently, mosque inscription sets should be considered not merely as decorative elements but as multilayered components of cultural heritage that make visible the concepts of tawhid, prophethood, caliphate, and devotion to the Prophet’s family within the mosque space.
Özet
Cami mimarisinde hüsn-i hat uygulamaları, İslam sanatının tevhid merkezli anlam dünyasını görünür kılan temel ifade biçimlerinden biridir.
