Abstract

The position, socio-cultural and economic status of women in the Ottoman Empire reveals that they had an effective power over the buildings they built. In this study, fountain structures within the scope of women's activity in the field of architecture are discussed. The vâlide sultans, who held the highest position in the Harem in the Ottoman Empire and were known as the most prestigious ladies of the palace, also occupied a special position within the sultan's family as the mother of the sultan. Their power and wealth increased as a result of their sons' taking the title of sultan and their active position in the palace. In this way, they built many religious and socio-cultural buildings such as mosques, madrasas, darüşşifa, baths and bridges. Among the important architectural contributions of the valide sultans in the Ottoman period were the fountains they built to meet the needs of the society. Although the fountains built by the governor sultans were intended to meet the needs of the society, they also appear as structures reflecting the aesthetic tastes of the period. Accordingly, fountains are the most common building group built by the governor sultans. In this context, a total of 47 fountains in Istanbul, Edirne, Giresun and Mersin provinces were analysed. Research, examination and analysis methods were used in the article and the study was completed by using literature works and related historical works as sources.
