Abstract
In the Ottoman Empire, royal women left a lasting impact on society not only through their influence within the palace, but also through their charitable works and architectural patronage. This study offers a multifaceted examination of the preferences and interventions of dynastic women in architectural production processes. Far from being mere financial sponsors, these royal women actively participated in key phases of architectural endeavors, including the selection of building sites, as well as the determination of functional and aesthetic characteristics. In this context, the study analyzes women's contributions to architecture through elements such as the structuring of endowments (waqf), strategic spatial decisions, the functional diversity of architectural programs, and aesthetic orientations. The complexes, mosques, tombs, and fortresses commissioned by prominent figures such as Rabia Gülnûş Sultan, Hatice Turhan Sultan, Nurbanu Sultan, Kösem Sultan, Mihrişah Sultan, and Pertevniyal Sultan are examined not solely as manifestations of personal piety or philanthropy, but also as deliberate strategies through which these women sought to reinforce their political, social, and religious legitimacy and to assert visibility in the public sphere.
