Abstract

This study examines 224 tweets posted on the X account of Oğuz Alper Öktem, CEO of Martı TAG, a ride-sharing platform known in Türkiye, between February 17, 2025, and February 17, 2026, through thematic content analysis using MAXQDA. Platform capitalism, the mediatization of law, and the populist construction of “the people” provide the theoretical framework for explaining the main dynamics of the analysed content. Within this framework, the study discusses the transformation of commercial interest into idealistic discourse, the search for mass legitimacy through the mediation of legal processes, and the conversion of users into political subjects. The findings are organized under five main themes: Problem definition (the construction of antagonism), the politics of emotion (reflexive control and mobilization), the promise of solution (platform capitalism and idealistic discourse), legitimation (mediatization and the transformation of law), and identity and values (the populist construction of “we”). The study demonstrates that the CEO’s discourse is structured around four overlapping functions: The construction of antagonism, in Laclau’s sense, by uniting grievances around a common enemy; the legitimation of platform capitalism through idealistic discourse in Srnicek’s sense; the mediatization of law, which translates legal processes into a language of mass mobilization; and the construction of a populist collective identity. In this regard, the CEO’s own description of his discourse as a “propaganda power” is interpreted as a concrete indicator of this strategic awareness. Ultimately, the Martı TAG case makes an original contribution to platform communication studies by showing that digital platform entrepreneurship seeks its commercial legitimacy not on legal grounds, but in the support of a constructed “people,” while social media becomes the primary instrument of this construction.
