Abstract

Digital systems emerging from technological advancements have become an important part of everyday social life. Young people, particularly those born during a period of increased digital opportunities and defined as "digital natives," represent individuals who intensively use digital technologies. This situation necessitates a re-examination of the relationship between these young people and digital technologies. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal the relationship between digital amnesia and nomophobia, new phenomena that play an active role in the cognitive and behavioral practices of young people as digital technologies become more widespread. Digital amnesia is defined as a decrease in the ability to memorize and recall information due to excessive reliance on digital devices, while nomophobia is defined as the fear of being deprived of smartphones. This aim is explored through a survey research design, primarily using a relational survey model. The study population consists of 34,767 students studying at İnönü University, while the sample comprises 562 students selected using convenience sampling, a non-probabilistic sampling technique. In this study, the "Digital Amnesia Scale” developed by Babaoğlu et al. and the "Nomophobia Scale” developed by Yıldırım et al. were used as data collection tools. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis with SPSS version 26.0, and the relationship and direction of the relationship between digital amnesia and nomophobia in the sample group representing the population were revealed. As a result of the study, a moderate, positive, and significant relationship was found between nomophobia and digital amnesia.
