Abstract
In the 19th century, one of the new media tools that became part of Ottoman social life was journals. During this period, these periodicals—which presented new visual materials such as illustrations and photographs alongside text—began to transform reading culture and existing representational practices. The texts and visuals published in journals began to acquire new meanings together, evolving into representational tools that enabled new readings and encounters through their narratives of space. Within these journals, the illustrated novel—a new literary genre —serves as a representational tool that both creates narratives through the combined and separate use of text and visuals and, through these narratives, re-creates space. In this study, illustrated novels are evaluated within the context of spatial representation. This study aims to reveal the roles played by text and visuals in the novel’s spatial representation, as well as how these tools construct and produce space collectively and individually. For this purpose, “Araba Sevdası” by Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem—the first illustrated novel published in the Servet-i Fünûn journal in 1896—has been selected as the case study. This study examines how space is represented through text and visuals in the novel Araba Sevdası.
