Abstract
Kütahya is an important center located in the region known as Phrygia, with a history as a settlement dating back to ancient times. The city, which has been home to many civilizations, came under Ottoman rule in 1428. It is known that ceramics were produced in Kütahya from 3000 BC onwards, and tile production from the 14th century. From this date onwards, although there were some differences in colors and motifs depending on the period, it can be seen that Kütahya tiles were used in the decoration of many buildings using the underglaze technique. The Takvacılar (Timurtaş Pasha) Mosque in Kütahya, believed to have been built between the 14th and 15th centuries, is also among the structures that use tiles. The mosque's mihrab, minbar, and pulpit feature Kütahya tiles dating from the first half of the 20th century. The underglaze tile decorations, prepared and installed in the structure at two different times, feature motifs and styles characteristic of different periods. This study aims to examine the tiles in the original mihrab niche of the Takvacılar Mosque, as well as the tiles in the later additions to the mihrab surround, minbar, and pulpit, in terms of their technical, color, motif, and compositional characteristics. In addition, the motifs and compositions seen on the tiles of the building were compared with similar examples from earlier periods and an attempt was made to evaluate the changes the building underwent.
