Abstract

Fluctuating asymmetry is defined as random, minor deviations from an organism’s bilateral perfect symmetry. Fluctuating asymmetry, which can occur in the bilateral characteristics of fish in response to environmental stress, is used to assess stress and developmental stability. The aim of this study was to investigate the fluctuating asymmetry in the sagittal otoliths of the Saurida lessepsianus Russell, Golani & Tikochinski, 2015 population inhabiting the Gulf of Iskenderun. The sagittal otolith pairs of S. lessepsianus individuals (n=63), divided into seven total length groups, were measured, and levels of fluctuating asymmetry, named the square of the coefficient of variation for asymmetry (CVa²) for otolith length (OL) and width (OW), were assessed. A statistically significant difference was detected between the left and right otolith width values of fish individuals (P < 0.05). The highest asymmetry value for OG was 7.325 in IV. length group, and the lowest asymmetry value was 0.214 in I. length group. The highest asymmetry value for OB was 1.964 in III. length group, and the lowest asymmetry value was 0.296 in II. length group. The relationships between total length (TB) and (CVa²) values were calculated as y = 0.2582x – 2.56 for OG and y = 0.0326x + 0.4259 for OB. Climate change and human activities in the Mediterranean Sea are negatively impacting the ecosystem. The high number of individuals with asymmetrical otoliths in the S. lessepsianus population suggests that the individuals may be under stress.
