Abstract

Developments in digital technologies are transforming advertising practices, marketing communication processes, and consumer experiences from a user centered perspective. As one of the most prominent manifestations of this transformation, the metaverse offers users an immersive, three-dimensional, and interactive environment. Empirical studies examining user attitudes toward advertising, shopping, and purchase intentions in the metaverse remain limited. This study aims to explore user attitudes toward the metaverse as a commercial medium in the context of advertising and shopping. The study adopted a quantitative research design and employed purposive sampling. Data were collected through an online questionnaire administered via Google Forms to individuals aged 18 and over across Türkiye who were familiar with the metaverse or had experience using it. After data cleaning, 565 valid responses were included in the analysis. The study examined metaverse experience scores, frequency of metaverse use, exposure to advertising in the metaverse, and general attitudes toward the metaverse as a commercial medium. Exploratory factor analysis showed that the six items related to advertising and shopping loaded onto a single factor. Participants’ overall attitudes toward the metaverse were moderately positive. General attitude scores differed significantly according to the frequency of metaverse use, with more frequent use associated with more positive attitudes. Participants who reported exposure to advertising in the metaverse had significantly higher general attitude scores than those who reported no such exposure. A significant positive relationship was found between metaverse experience scores and general attitudes. Multiple regression analysis showed that frequency of metaverse use, experience score, and advertising exposure significantly predicted general attitudes, with the model explaining 63.5% of the variance in general attitude scores. The findings suggest that users perceive the metaverse as a commercial medium in the context of advertising and shopping.
