Abstract

Today, consumption practices do not merely serve the function of meeting basic needs, but also encompass the desire for identity construction, social acceptance, and differentiation. This desire, continuously reproduced through advertisements, drives individuals toward a sense of lack and thereby fuels new consumption pursuits. Indeed, as seen in Lacan’s theory of the “objet petit a” (object of desire), consumption ceases to be merely an economic activity and transforms into a cultural and psychological process. In order to address this transformation, the study examines the motivations behind the use of these products by construction workers who use luxury-brand mobile phones within the framework of the theory of the object of desire. Within this scope, the research was designed as a phenomenological qualitative study. In the data generation process, face-to-face interviews were conducted with construction workers using the semi-structured interview technique. The data obtained from these interviews were analyzed using the qualitative analysis software MAXQDA 26.2.1. As a result of the research, it was found that luxury-brand mobile phones were preferred by the participants not only for their functional features but also in line with the needs for status, belonging, and self-reward. When this situation is evaluated within the framework of Lacan’s theory of the object of desire, it demonstrates that the individual continuously turns toward new objects of desire within the consumption cycle and becomes the target of marketing messages produced by brands.
