Abstract
Postmodernism refers to a period in which the ideas of absolute truth and grand narratives are abandoned in literature. The text ceases to function as a mirror reflecting reality and instead becomes a structure that questions its own construction and engages in dialogue with other texts. Metafiction, intertextuality, pastiche, montage, parody, and irony are among the principal devices of this structure. The fictional plane, in which reality is destabilized and different genres coexist, resembles a carnival. This tendency, whose reflections began to emerge in Western literature in the 1960s, became more pronounced in Turkish literature after the 1980s and, from the 1990s onward, developed into one of the major currents of the Turkish novel. This study aims to examine Metin Savaş’s novel Owls Hoоt at Night (Baykuşlar Geceleyin Öter), the first book of his Carnival in Istanbul (İstanbul’da Karnaval) trilogy, in the context of postmodernist elements. In this work, which rejects the pursuit of absolute truth, the author deliberately dismantles the boundaries between language, fiction, and reality, transforming the text as a whole into a space of play. With metafiction placed at the center of the novel, the process of writing the book itself becomes part of the fiction, thereby eliminating the traditional hierarchy among the author, the characters, and the reader. Conventional literary boundaries are deconstructed through intertextual references to writers such as Dostoevsky, Gogol, and Márquez, as well as through pastiche and irony. The planned murder is presented not as a moral issue but rather as an absurd aesthetic experiment. In addition, symbols such as the owl, the number three, and the mirror are blended with elements of popular culture, reinforcing the multilayered structure of the work. Ultimately, the novel represents a philosophical labyrinth in which death and existential emptiness in a fragmented world are transcended through wordplay.
