Abstract
This study aims to analyze Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s short story (La Condenada) within the framework of Michel Foucault’s concepts of discipline, body, and punishment. It argues that the story does not merely portray the individual tragedy of a prisoner sentenced to death, but also reveals how the modern penal regime surrounds, transforms, and gradually dissolves both the body and the subject. In this respect, Rafael’s imprisonment and prolonged waiting of execution are examined in light of Foucauldian disciplinary power. The analysis demonstrates that punishment in the story is not limited to the singular moment of execution; rather, it is constructed as a continuous disciplinary mechanism operating on both body and psyche through surveillance, isolation, silencing, restriction of movement, and a prolonged state of uncertainty. Within this context, the prison appears not simply as a place of confinement, but as an apparatus of power that controls the body, fragments the subject, and reproduces identity under conditions of discipline. Consequently, “La Condenada” can be read not only as a story about capital punishment, but also as a powerful literary text that exposes the multilayered functioning of modern punishment on the body and subjectivity.
