Abstract
This study examines how the concept of imamate in the historical worldview of the Imamite Shi’a guided the interpretation of early Islamic history and sirah narratives. The central question of the study is what effects Shi’i thought had on the selection, sequencing, and interpretation of historical material concerning the imamate. Within this framework, classical Shi’i sources were first compared with early sirah and historical works to assess the relationship between the historical contexts of the narratives and their subsequent sectarian uses. The study also examines how the concept of imamate transformed into an interpretive framework that regulates chronology, causality, the status of historical figures, and the criteria for the legitimacy of that status in Shi’i historiography. In fact, Ali’s status as one of the first Muslims, his role on the night of the Hijrah, the mu‘ahat (brotherhood pact), his marriage to Fatima, and his military successes are presented as parts of an uninterrupted life trajectory leading up to divine election, while narrations such as Inzar, Menzile, and Ghadir-i Khumm are interpreted as general texts on imamate that transcend their historical contexts, while events such as Kirtas and Saqifa have been transformed into turning points explaining why divine appointment did not materialize in the political sphere. Thus, the early political history of the Shi’a has been constructed by Shi'i authors-by framing the appointment of the legitimate Imam, whose authority is beyond dispute; the obstruction of this appointment in one way or another; and the continuation of this political authority through the chain of Imams-in a manner that does not align with historical data. The study also argues that the historical existence of sirah narratives must be distinguished from the political conclusions drawn from them. When the dates of composition of the sources, the variants of the narrations, and the ways in which the narrations are quoted are examined together, this article also advances the thesis that the Shi’i conception of history is constructed through processes of selection, expansion, contextualization, and retroactive interpretation. Ultimately, the concept of imamate has served not only as a concept explaining the past, but also as a sacred interpretive framework that determines which events constitute the past and what political significance these events carry and it has become a defining characteristic of Shi’ism.
