Abstract
Historical narratives occupy a significant place within the content of the Qur’an, constituting nearly one-third of its verses. The Qur’an particularly conveyed its messages during the Meccan period through these narratives. Therefore, it is certain that each prophetic story has a counterpart in the life of the Prophet Muhammad. The story of Jesus (‘Īsā), adorned with miracles and extraordinary accounts, has been examined in various aspects within the Islamic literature, resulting in numerous books, theses, and articles on the subject. However, the narrative of Jesus speaking in the cradle has not been thoroughly analyzed within the framework of the Qur’an-Sīrah relationship. In particular, no independent study has been identified that explores what the verses “…keyfa nukallimu man kāna fī al-mahdi ṣabiyyā/How can we speak to one who is in the cradle, a child?” and “…yukallimu/tukallimu al-nāsa fī al-mahdi wa kahlā/He/You will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity” corresponds to in the life and biography of the Prophet Muhammad. Accordingly, this study aims to reveal, through a descriptive analytical method, the relationship between the narrative of Jesus speaking in the cradle and the Prophet Muhammad’s mission of proclamation and prophethood, taking into account the general rationale behind the narration of prophetic stories. Additionally, the article critically examines whether the event itself or the verses referring to it should be understood as a miracle, within the context of the relationship between the Qur’an, Sīrah, and history. The study concludes that the concepts of mahd (cradle) and ṣabī (boy) mentioned in the narrative have been misinterpreted in Islamic literature due to a literal reading. The term ṣabī, which was used in a sarcastic tone in the sense of “a child still in the cradle as of yesterday” due to the influence of Jesus’ divine identity in the Christian tradition, has been detached from its metaphorical and figurative meaning and instead interpreted as literal truth in conjunction with the mahd and kahl expressions. In essence, in line with the purpose of its narration, the story does not describe Jesus literally speaking in the cradle, but rather refers to the derogatory statements and contemptuous attitudes of religious scholars and clergy towards his prophethood. It is observed that, like Jesus, the Prophet Muḥammad was also occasionally humiliated and disparaged for his age by the polytheist elites and tribal leaders during the period of revelation; despite being around forty years old, he was characterized as a ṣabī, ghulām, or ṭifl (child, youth, inexperienced, immature).
Özet
Tarihi kıssalar, Kur’an’ın muhtevasında geniş bir yer tutmaktadır. Kur’an’ın yaklaşık üçte birini teşkil etmektedir. İsa’nın beşikte konuşması, siyer-Kur’an ilişkisi çerçevesinde etraflıca incelenmemiştir. Bilhassa Hz. İsa’nın beşikte konuşmasını ifade eden “…keyfe nükellimü men kâne fi’l-mehdi sabiyyâ/Beşikteki bir bebekle nasıl konuşuruz?” (Meryem 19/29), “…yükellimü/tükellimü’n-nâse fi’l-mehdi ve kehlâ/Beşikte iken de, yetişkin iken de insanlara konuşuyordun” (Âl-i İmrân 3/46; el-Mâide 5/110) şeklindeki ayetlerin Hz. Peygamber’in hayatında neye tekabül ettiğini ortaya koyan müstakil bir çalışma bulunmamaktadır. Hz. İsa gibi Hz. Muhammed’in de nüzûl döneminde zaman zaman müşrik ileri gelenler ve kabile reisleri tarafından yaşından dolayı tahkir ve tezyif edildiği, kırk yaşlarında olmasına rağmen sabî/gulâm/tıfıl (çocuk, genç, toy, tecrübesiz, yeni yetme) olarak nitelendiği görülmektedir.
