Abstract

This study examined the predictive roles of earthquake fear and religious coping strategies for earthquake resilience among adults. The study, which employed a cross-sectional and predictive design, included 326 adults who participated via an online survey. Of the participants, 70.2% were female, with a mean age of 22.5 years ± 5.29. The majority were single (89.9%); 50.3% had completed high school; and 53.4% had experienced at least one disaster in their lifetime. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Form, Earthquake Resilience Scale, Earthquake Fear Scale, and Religious Coping Scale. In addition to descriptive statistics, multiple linear regression analysis using the “enter” method was applied to test the predictive power of the variables on earthquake resilience. The regression model significantly predicted earthquake resilience [R=0.463, F(7, 318)=8.79, p<0.001] and explained 16.2% of the variance. Earthquake fear significantly predicted resilience in a negative direction (β = -0.281, p < 0.001), while female gender predicted it in a positive direction (β = 0.361, p = 0.005). Religious coping, marital status, and disaster experience were not significant predictors. These results emphasize the importance of individual- and community-based intervention strategies to reduce fear of earthquakes and enhance the resilience of vulnerable groups during disaster preparedness.
