Abstract

This study aims to examine Toshikazu Kawaguchi's novel *Before We Say Goodbye* within the context of atmosphere theory, discussing the relationship between atmosphere and architecture through its temporal, bodily, and narrative dimensions. The starting point of the study is the assumption that atmosphere is not merely an aesthetic quality stemming from the physical characteristics of a space; rather, it is a relational construct established through memory, time, the body, and emotions. Accordingly, the novel is considered a narrative tool that makes visible the transformative potential of atmosphere. The research is developed through three layers. First, the nonlinear nature of time is examined through the concepts of memory and transformation; the relationship between continuity and change in atmosphere is discussed through the cherry blossom metaphor and the examples of Ise Jingu and Sasalı Biolab. Second, the multi-sensory and bodily dimensions of atmosphere are addressed; the auditory, visual, and bodily experiences of the café, a diegetic space, are linked to the examples of the Center of Silence and the Blur Building. Finally, the narrative dimension of atmosphere is examined; the role of emotions such as loss, guilt, longing, and acceptance in the characters' transformation is evaluated within the context of Japanese culture and commemorative practices. The study revealed that atmosphere is not merely a spatial quality that generates positive emotions; rather, experiences such as lack and loss can also create a continuity, producing different transformative atmospheres at each ‘moment.’ Therefore, the two-way relationship between the experiencer and the space is emphasized. In some cases, as in the novel, the experiencer can encounter different atmospheres in a time period that is sequential in the conventional sense. In this context, the ‘negative’ atmosphere is considered not as a situation that wears down the experiencer, but rather as a productive space of coexistence that enables the individual to reconnect with their past and losses. This study aims to offer a new perspective on atmospheric research and contribute to a rethinking of architecture not only as a physical environment but also as a practice that shapes the relationships experiencers establish with memory, time, and emotions.
