Abstract

Objective: In arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis, syringes containing dry heparin (DH) or syringes washed with liquid heparin (LH). In our study, two methods were compared in terms of arterial blood gas (ABG) parameters and evaluated regarding their correlations with biochemical analyses. Material and Methods: The study was performed in 57 patients with intraarterial catheters and hospitalized in intensive care units of cardiovascular surgery. Biochemical analysis were compared in simultaneously blood samples drawn with DH orLH (heparin sodium) syringes. Results: pH, sO2, lactate and HCO3 values measured using LH were statistically significantly lower than those measured with DH syringes. Potassium levels measured with LH syringes were statistically significantly lower than those measured with DH syringes and biochemical K+ results. Sodium levels measured with LH injectors were found to be higher than measured with DH injectors and biochemistry results. Any statistically significant differencewas not found between analytical results of blood samples drawn using DH syringes and biochemistry results. In glucose measurements, LH results were statistically significantly lower than DH results and higher than biochemical results; furthermore DH results were statistically significantly higher than biochemical results. Conclusion: More acidotic results were obtained from analysis of blood samples drawn with LH injectors than DH injectors. We think that higher Na+ results obtained in analysis of blood samples using LH syringes was due to Na+ content of heparin itself. The samples drawn using LH syringes may have caused low levels of K+ due to dilution. When LH syringes are used, the size of the syringe and the amount of blood drawn are important factors. Heparin has to be washed out of the syringe with the air within after heparin wash-done procedure. If heparin is not completely emptied, or when small amounts of blood are drawn, lower blood pH may be measured because of LH-induced dilution. We think that, the amount of LH left after syringe washing with heparin can not be fully known and since different application will be done due to different individuals, usage of DH syringes will be much more suitable and differences between biochemistry results obtained in analysis of blood samples drawn with DH or LH syringes may occur due to many factors such as the method of drawing blood sample and the time passed till the time of analysis.
