Abstract

This study examines the place, function, and role of proverbs and idioms in Turkish language and culture textbooks prepared for Turkish students living abroad in their meaning-making processes. Proverbs and idioms, which are multi-word structures (lexical chunks) beyond individual words, emerge as an important facilitating element in the language learning process. The contribution of the meanings of their constituent elements to the whole alleviates the learning burden and enables students to grasp the language more quickly. At this point, the transparency of proverbs and idioms is seen as a critical factor in students' meaning-making process. Within the scope of the research, Turkish and Turkish Culture textbooks taught between 2019 and 2025 and Turkish and Turkish Culture textbooks for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8, which were approved for use for five years starting from the 2025-2026 academic year, were examined. The analysis examined how proverbs and idioms were represented in the textbooks both quantitatively and qualitatively, and numerical comparisons were made between the textbooks. In the 2019–2025 textbooks, proverbs and idioms focus more on fundamental values such as family, solidarity, and diligence; in the 2025 editions, these elements are integrated with contemporary themes such as health, cultural roots, art, and science. In the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade books, lexical elements have been increasingly thematic, balanced, and culturally in-depth. The new edition has transformed proverbs and idioms into teaching tools that support cultural identity building, values education, and critical thinking processes. This demonstrates that Turkish Language and Turkish Culture textbooks have adopted a more holistic and contemporary approach, both pedagogically and culturally.
