Abstract
Seyitömer Höyük is located 25 km northwest of Kütahya Province. Situated within the grounds of a thermal power plant, archaeological excavations at the site—which began in 1989 to access the coal reserves in the area—are still ongoing today. Layers dating to the Roman and Hellenistic periods, as well as the Iron Age, Middle Bronze Age, Early Bronze Age III, and Early Bronze Age II have been uncovered at the mound. With its layers dating to the Early and Middle Bronze Ages, Seyitömer Höyük provides important data that sheds light on the archaeology of both the region and Inner Western Anatolia. When the strata excavated in the horizontal plane are evaluated together with their phases, this allows for the interpretation of the data as a whole and the tracking of their development. In this context, it has been possible to trace the development of painted decorations on pottery from the Early Bronze Age at Seyitömer Höyük. Throughout the Early Bronze Age, two types of painted decorations were used: white and red. The subject of this study is red-paint decoration dating to the Early Bronze Age and its development. This decoration was first identified in a few examples from the late phase of Early Bronze Age II. Its widespread use is evident in the Early Bronze Age III stratum. The primary vessel forms on which red-paint decoration appears include bowls, plates, jugs, and lids. In the case of plates and bowls, the decoration is applied to the interior of the vessel; on jugs, it is applied to the exterior; and on lids, it is applied to the surface of the lid. The motifs used can be divided into two categories: decorative and figurative. While solid circles and wavy lines stand out among the decorative motifs, stylized human and animal figures are found among the figurative motifs. This study examines the development of red-painted pottery found at Seyitömer Höyük, presenting examples selected from different phases. In light of this painted pottery, the study also addresses interregional relationships during the Early Bronze Age.
