Abstract
The Kingdom of Pontus emerged as one of the preeminent successor states established in Anatolia following the collapse of Alexander the Great’s empire. Until its dissolution by Rome (63 BC), the kingdom achieved significant political and military successes extending from the Black Sea Basin to Greece. This study evaluates certain architectural elements dating to the Hellenistic Period in the Pontic Region, located in the central and eastern parts of Northern Anatolia, which constitutes the core territory of the Kingdom of Pontus. Within this scope, Hellenistic architectural remains from key settlements such as Kurul Fortress (Ordu), Cıngırt Kayası (Fatsa, Ordu), Oluz Höyük (Amasya), Amasya Harşena Fortress, Aretias Island (Giresun), Comana Pontica (Tokat), and Ziyaretsuyu (Hafik, Sivas) are examined. Particularly in recent years, our knowledge of Hellenistic period architecture in the Pontic region has increased through archaeological excavations that have improved in both quantity and quality, providing an opportunity to understand and evaluate the architectural preferences of the era. The primary objective of this study is to identify the characteristics of these architectural remains, provide information on construction techniques, and determine the similarities and differences among the Hellenistic period architectures of these settlements. Although the subject matter is quite extensive, it has been treated as concisely as possible to present a representative synthesis through selected examples, aiming to provide the reader with a comprehensive perspective on the Hellenistic period architecture of the region.
