Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively examine the architectural and functional transformation of pandocheia, constructed along road networks, within the new system shaped by the multifaceted instabilities faced by the Byzantine Empire during the Middle Byzantine period, based on written sources, epigraphic data, and archaeological findings. The methodology of the study relies on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data to evaluate the distribution of pandocheia along road networks in the Ancient and Late Antique periods, complemented by detailed documentation conducted at sites along the Pessinus-Synnada route that may have been used for accommodation. Additionally, a comprehensive evaluation was made of the limited number of epigraphic and archaeological data, mostly dated to the Late Antique period, identified near Sykeon, Korykos, and Edessa in Anatolia. The findings reveal that stables, palatial complexes, and residential units identified in Cappadocia indicate that rock settlements in the Middle Byzantine period were used not only for shelter but also as multifunctional complexes addressing the accommodation and logistical needs of local communities and travellers. Furthermore, rock-cut spaces in Central and Southeastern Anatolia provide important comparative data for assessing areas that may have been used for lodging purposes. The study concludes that the insecure environment that emerged in Anatolia after the late seventh century AD led to the abandonment of vulnerable pandocheia located in open areas, while multifunctional arrangements such as the Kirkinler Rock Complex may represent an alternative accommodation model that emerged in response to changing security conditions in the Middle Byzantine Anatolia.
