Abstract

Graphic design has long been defined through object-centered visual products such as posters, logos, books, and packaging. However, between 2020 and 2026, the discipline underwent a significant transformation that redefined its boundaries. This study investigates this transformation by analyzing 4,396 editorial contents collected from 66 international sources, including design media, software developers’ blogs, brand publications, user experience (UX) platforms, and artificial intelligence laboratories. The dataset was examined using multi-label thematic coding, temporal trend analysis, co-occurrence analysis, and a source ecology approach. The findings reveal that generative artificial intelligence (AI) became a major turning point in graphic design discourse after 2022, giving rise to a new design ecosystem that connects areas such as brand identity, user experience (UX), motion graphics, design systems, typography, education, and design workflows. During the same period, the source network expanded considerably, growing from seven active sources in 2020 to forty-five in 2026. Nevertheless, the geographical and institutional distribution of AI-related discourse remains uneven, with the transformation being driven primarily by U.S.-based companies and research laboratories. Additional analyses indicate that although the overall volume of publications continued to increase throughout 2026, the proportion of AI-focused content declined. This suggests that AI has evolved from an emerging innovation into an established component of contemporary graphic design practice. Overall, the study demonstrates that computational content analysis provides a reliable and scalable approach for examining large-scale transformations within the field of graphic design.
