Abstract
Contemporary mosque designs are no longer regarded solely as places of worship but are increasingly approached as spaces that address diverse user needs through accessible, inclusive, and user-centered design strategies. In this context, the universal design approach, which aims to enable different user groups to experience worship spaces equally and independently, provides an important theoretical framework for evaluating contemporary mosque spaces. The theoretical basis of this study is the universal design approach developed by Ronald Mace, consisting of seven fundamental principles. The aim of this study is to evaluate Sancaklar Mosque, designed by Emre Arolat, according to these seven universal design principles and to identify its strengths as well as aspects requiring improvement in terms of universal design. The research adopts a qualitative case study methodology. Field observations, photographic documentation, architectural plan analysis, and a comprehensive literature review were employed, and the collected data were analyzed through descriptive analysis using an evaluation matrix developed based on the seven principles of universal design. The analysis focused on accessibility, spatial organization, wayfinding, circulation, natural lighting, and user-centered spatial solutions from a holistic perspective. The findings indicate that Sancaklar Mosque largely complies with the principles of universal design while revealing both its strengths and areas that require further improvement. Overall, the study proposes an evaluation framework for assessing contemporary mosque spaces through the lens of universal design principles, thereby contributing to the design of user-centered worship environments and to the literature in the field of interior architecture.
Özet
Çağdaş cami tasarımları, yalnızca ibadet işlevini yerine getiren yapılar olmanın ötesinde, farklı kullanıcı gereksinimlerini karşılayan ve erişilebilir, kapsayıcı ve kullanıcı odaklı mekânlar sunmayı amaçlayan tasarım yaklaşımlarıyla ele alınmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, farklı kullanıcı gruplarının ibadet mekânlarını eşit ve bağımsız biçimde deneyimleyebilmesini hedefleyen evrensel tasarım yaklaşımı, çağdaş cami mekânlarının değerlendirilmesinde önemli bir kuramsal çerçeve sunmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın kuramsal çerçevesini, Ronald Mace tarafından geliştirilen ve yedi temel ilkeden oluşan evrensel tasarım yaklaşımı oluşturmaktadırBu çalışmanın amacı, Emre Arolat tarafından tasarlanan Sancaklar Cami'ni, Ronald Mace tarafından geliştirilen yedi evrensel tasarım ilkesi doğrultusunda değerlendirerek, çağdaş cami mekânının evrensel tasarım ilkeleri bakımından güçlü ve geliştirilmesi gereken yönlerini ortaya koymaktır. Araştırma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması desenine dayanmaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında yerinde gözlem, fotoğraf dokümantasyonu, mimari plan incelemeleri ve literatür taraması birlikte kullanılmış; elde edilen veriler, evrensel tasarımın yedi temel ilkesi doğrultusunda oluşturulan değerlendirme matrisi aracılığıyla betimsel analiz yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir. Analiz sürecinde erişilebilirlik, mekânsal organizasyon, yönlenebilirlik, dolaşım, doğal ışık kullanımı ve kullanıcı odaklı mekânsal çözümler bütüncül bir yaklaşımla ele alınmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, Sancaklar Cami'nin çağdaş tasarım yaklaşımının evrensel tasarım ilkeleriyle büyük ölçüde uyum gösterdiğini ortaya koymuş; yapının güçlü yönlerini ve geliştirilmesi gereken yönlerini belirlemiştir. Sonuç olarak çalışma, çağdaş cami mekânlarının evrensel tasarım ilkeleri doğrultusunda değerlendirilmesine yönelik bir değerlendirme yaklaşımı önererek kullanıcı odaklı ibadet mekânlarının tasarımına ve iç mimarlık literatürüne katkı sağlamaktadır.
