Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the performance of equity-intensive mutual funds that invest in stocks traded on Borsa Istanbul with the performance of replication funds constructed by mimicking the portfolio holdings these funds disclose through the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). Within the scope of the analysis, replication portfolios were created by exactly mirroring the stocks and their weights in the portfolios of the five most successful equity-intensive funds over the past five years for the period between February 2021 and November 2025. In addition, changes in the fund portfolios were monitored on a monthly basis and reflected in the replication portfolios. The returns of the replication funds were compared with those of the original funds both before and after accounting for transaction costs. The panel data analysis shows that replication funds closely track the net returns of the original funds when transaction costs are not considered; however, once transaction costs are included, the replication funds fail to outperform the original funds. The findings indicate that despite the management fees applied in equity-intensive funds, replication portfolios do not surpass the performance of these funds. Therefore, for individual investors, investing directly in successful funds rather than attempting to replicate their stock selections appears to be the more rational strategy.
