Abstract

This study examines issues of bibliographic evidence, record reliability, contextual note-making, and file/record boundaries that emerge prior to cataloging the printed materials in the Nail Tan Collection at Kastamonu City Museum within the frameworks of RDA and MARC 21. Designed as a qualitative case study, the research involved a preliminary review of 725 digital records and a detailed analysis of 11 selected records in order to make pre-cataloging decision thresholds visible. The findings show that the collection includes standard monographs, publications with series or editorial intervention, institution- or event-based materials, records with limited bibliographic evidence, and units with record-boundary problems. This diversity indicates that some records are suitable for full cataloging after verification against the physical item, whereas others require the completion of missing information and contextual note-making; still others require re-inspection in terms of bibliographic unit boundaries, page order, or file integrity. The study treats digital record files not as substitutes for final cataloging based on physical materials, but as a bibliographic pre-inspection space prior to RDA-based cataloging.
