Abstract

This study offers a comparative analysis of how Martin Heidegger and Mawlānā Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī engage with being through poetry, and discusses how this relationship can be reconsidered as a possibility for “ontological literacy” in contemporary thought and education. Within the scope of the research, Heidegger’s conception of poetic language is systematically analyzed through the connection he establishes between poetry and the disclosure of being and; subsequently, the aspects in which this conception intersects with Rūmī’s mystical teachings—on conceptual, experiential, and linguistic levels—are elaborated in detail. In particular, Heidegger’s positioning of poetry not merely as an aesthetic pursuit but as a field of possibility that opens toward the truth of being exhibits striking parallels with Rūmī’s modes of expression in the Mathnawī, where poetry and narrative guide the reader toward an intuitive and inner apprehension of truth. The poetic sensitivity cultivated in opposition to the technical-modern interpretation of being is here evaluated not as a mere literary inclination but as an existential mode of thinking. In this framework, poetic thinking is treated as a form of awareness that transforms the individual’s relation of meaning both with oneself and with the world, encompassing cognitive as well as affective dimensions. It is argued that such an approach can re-center the existential depth often neglected in modern education, thereby contributing both to individual self-awareness and to pedagogical renewal. The article reconsiders Heidegger’s poetic thought—developed through his engagement with poets such as Hölderlin and Trakl—in dialogue with Rūmī’s Mathnawī, and discusses the possibilities of a universal literacy model that transcends cultural boundaries. This model proceeds from the idea that language is not merely communicative but also an ontological field of experience, thereby seeking to reassess the ways in which human beings approach truth.
