Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge levels of fourth- and fifth-year dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Gaziantep University, regarding adhesive systems and composite resin applications. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional survey. Following institutional ethics approval, an electronic questionnaire was administered to trainee students in both the cohorts. The questionnaire consisted of two sections: demographic characteristics and items assessing theoretical knowledge and procedural understanding related to composite resin restorative techniques. Data were collected electronically through university email accounts and analyzed using Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 193 students participated in the study, including 89 males (46.1%) and 104 females (53.9%); 102 (52.8%) were fifth-year students, and 91 (47.2%) were fourth-year students. Only 13% of the fourth-year and 28% of the fifth-year students reported sufficient knowledge of anterior composite systems. In parallel, 93% of fourth-year and 87% of fifth-year students expressed a willingness to pursue postgraduate training in anterior composite restorations. Fifth-year students demonstrated significantly higher knowledge levels regarding adhesive systems (p = 0.01), posterior composite restorations (p = 0.01), composite application techniques (p = 0.004), and polishing/finishing procedures (p = 0.004) than fourth-year students. Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of evaluating dental students’ perceptions of theoretical and clinical training in order to identify potential deficiencies in restorative dentistry education. Curriculum improvements based on competency assessments and student feedback may enhance the effectiveness of restorative training. Furthermore, multicenter studies including students from different dental faculties are recommended to improve the generalizability of these findings.

Katılımcıların 102’si (%52,8) 5. sınıfta, 91’i (%47,2) ise 4. sınıfta öğrenim görmektedir.
