Abstract

Aims: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of tooth brushing on the surface roughness of flowable and condensable colored compomer materials commonly used in pediatric dentistry. Methods: The blue-colored flowable and condensable forms of the Twinky Star (Voco, Cuxhaven, Germany) compomer material were used. A total of 20 samples were prepared, with 10 samples in each group. All specimens were polymerized under standard conditions, polished, and stored in distilled water for 24 hours. Baseline surface roughness was measured using a profilometer by averaging three readings for each sample. The specimens were then subjected to 10,000 brushing cycles in a brushing simulator using a medium-hard toothbrush under a constant pressure of 200 gF. Surface roughness measurements were repeated after brushing. Results: The results showed that simulated one-year tooth brushing significantly increased the surface roughness of both flowable and condensable compomers (p < 0.001). At baseline, the flowable compomer exhibited higher surface roughness values compared to the condensable compomer. Although both groups demonstrated increased roughness after brushing, the difference in the amount of increase between the groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.183). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it can be concluded that compomer materials are susceptible to surface abrasion caused by tooth brushing. Further clinical studies are recommended to validate these findings under in vivo conditions.

Özet

Bu in vitro çalışma, pediatrik diş hekimliğinde yaygın olarak kullanılan akıcı ve tepilebilir renkli kompomer materyallerinin yüzey pürüzlülüğü üzerine diş fırçalamanın etkisini değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada Twinky Star (Voco, Almanya) kompomer materyalinin mavi renkli akıcı ve tepilebilir formu kullanılmıştır. Her grupta 10 örnek olmak üzere toplam 20 numune hazırlanmış, standart koşullarda polimerize edilip polisajlanmış ve 24 saat distile suda bekletilmiştir. Fırçalama öncesi yüzey pürüzlülüğü profilometre ile üç ölçümün ortalaması alınarak belirlenmiştir. Ardından örnekler, 200 gF sabit basınç altında 10.000 döngü boyunca orta sertlikte fırça ile fırçalama simülatöründe işleme tabi tutulmuş ve yüzey pürüzlülüğü yeniden ölçülmüştür. Bulgular, bir yıllık fırçalama simülasyonunun her iki kompomer tipinde de yüzey pürüzlülüğünü anlamlı düzeyde artırdığını göstermiştir (p<0,001). Başlangıçta akıcı kompomerin tepilebilir kompomere kıyasla daha yüksek yüzey pürüzlülüğü değerlerine sahip olduğu belirlenmiştir. Fırçalama sonrası pürüzlülük artışı her iki grupta görülse de artış miktarları arasında istatistiksel fark bulunmamıştır (p=0,183). Çalışmanın bulguları, kompomer yüzeylerinin diş fırçalama kaynaklı aşınmaya duyarlı olduğunu göstermiştir. Ayrıca in vitro koşulların sınırlılıkları nedeniyle klinik çalışmalarla desteklenmesi gerektiği sonucuna varılmıştır.
