Abstract
This study is a brief review of the book titled The Shadow of the Past, the Anxiety of the Future: The 100-Year Quest of Philosophy in Turkiye [Geçmişin Gölgesi, Geleceğin Kaygısı: Türkiye’de Felsefenin 100 Yıllık Arayışı], which consists of proceedings from a symposium organized for the centenary of the Republic of Turkey. The work gathers fundamental areas under seven main headings: the establishment and structuring of philosophy departments in Turkey, philosophy education, problems of philosophy departments, philosophical schools, philosophy education in faculties of education, the appropriation of classical thought, and Philosophy for Children (P4C). The book addresses the institutional, pedagogical, and intellectual transformation that philosophy education in Turkey has undergone throughout the Republican era from a multifaceted perspective. The study demonstrates that philosophy education is not only an academic field of expertise but also one of the fundamental means of contemplating societal dilemmas and constructing a critical public sphere. In addition, issues such as interdisciplinary disconnection, employment problems, academic merit, institutional belonging, and pedagogical transformation are discussed in the work, accompanied by concrete data. Accordingly, the book consists of articles that offer a new intellectual framework proposal for the restructuring of philosophy in Turkey, based on purpose, method, interdisciplinarity, and historical experience. On the other hand, this review article also touches upon the thematically prominent and lacking aspects of the book. Ultimately, the book serves as a comprehensive reference that records the history of philosophy education in Turkey while seeking new intellectual possibilities for the Republic's second century.
