Abstract
This study explores the floor mosaics of the "Church of the Four Rivers" in the ancient city of Hadrianoupolis, Karabük, from iconographic and theological perspectives. The primary focus is the personifications of the "Four Rivers of Paradise" (Phison, Geon, Euphrates, and Tigris) as described in the Book of Genesis (2:10-14). The article discusses the potential theological meanings beyond the decorative functions of these depictions. The research adopts an interdisciplinary approach, comparing archaeological findings with Jewish exegetical traditions (Saadya Gaon) and the allegorical interpretations of the Church Fathers (Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome). The analysis suggests that the river personifications likely represent cardinal virtues in Christian theology: justice, courage, temperance, and prudence. Motifs such as the cornucopia and fish figures are interpreted in connection with concepts of baptism and divine abundance. Furthermore, symbols like the Maltese Cross are viewed as reflections of cultural continuity during the transition from Paganism to Christianity. In light of current literature, the Hadrianoupolis mosaics stand out as a significant example in Anatolia for reflecting Old Testament iconography in such detail. Ultimately, this study aims to present a model for how theological narratives were positioned as visual tools in Early Byzantine art.
