Abstract

Turkestan has historically emerged as a strategic region in which Turkic-Islamic states exercised significant political, economic, and cultural influence, thereby becoming a battleground of competition among imperial powers. The Khanates of Bukhara, Khiva, and Kokand, particularly from the sixteenth century onward, mounted multifaceted resistance against the expansionist policies of the Russian Empire, the British “Great Game” strategy, and China’s efforts to extend its influence in the region. This resistance in Turkistan was not confined solely to military confrontations; it was also reinforced through diplomatic initiatives, administrative reform efforts, and forms of social organization. During this process, local populations, in conjunction with the khanates and Islamic institutions, sought to construct a cultural and ideological identity through madrasas, waqfs, and religious leaders, which proved decisive in sustaining resistance over time. In this context, the Jadid movement, along with the ideologies of Pan-Islamism and Pan-Turkism, and the Basmachi Movement, stand out as institutionalized manifestations of political and social responses to imperialism. This study examines, from a historical perspective, the colonial policies, identity-based pressures, and dynamics of resistance experienced by the Muslims of Turkistan during the Tsarist and Soviet periods. It analyzes the struggle of Turkic-Islamic states in Turkistan against imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through qualitative methodology, employing content analysis of relevant sources and archival materials.
