Abstract

Recognized as a significant nosocomial pathogen in human medicine, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia poses a considerable threat due to its multidrugresistant profile. Despite its prominence in human infections, S. maltophilia remains an overlooked, misdiagnosed, or neglected pathogen in veterinary medicine, with limited studies and impact on various animal species. Few studies have focused on horses, dogs, goats, buffaloes, cats, sheep, cows, pigs, birds, fish, and reptiles. Besides, it has been reported in farm animals, food products, and farm environments (milking machines, bedding, feeders, etc.). The organism has an extensive range of habitats, causes infections in humans and animals, and naturally harbours multidrug resistance. It is noted that S. maltophilia can cause various clinical problems in immunocompromised animals, including soft tissue and skin infections, respiratory tract infections, severe septicemia, and cardiovascular infections. It has been isolated from cases of lymphadenitis in goats, arthritis and urinary tract infections in dogs, the respiratory system in horses, dogs and cats, pyogranulomatous hepatitis in buffalos, and mastitis in cattle. A thorough examination of the interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental factors is paramount for the well-being of both human and animal populations. This review aims to provide an overview of the occurrence, clinical significance, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of S. maltophilia in animals, highlighting the need for increased awareness and research in this area.
