Abstract
Aim: Technology makes human life easier while providing positive contributions, but its uncontrolled use causes many problems in daily life. This study aims to research the effect of technological device usage time on motor, social, cognitive, and speech development in children aged 36-60 months. Method: AGTE (Ankara Developmental Screening Test) and TEDİL (Turkish Early Language Development Screening Test) tests were administered face-to-face to 30 children aged 36-60 months in a preschool education program. Results: In our study, while maternal age and the number of siblings increased, the duration of technological device usage time also increased. Children who spent more than 2 hours on the phone had an average decrease of 15 to 20 points in their AGTE general development scores. Television was the most critical technological device affecting the scores of the TEDIL test. Children who never watched TV had a TEDIL expressive language standard score of 16.78 points higher than children who watched TV for 2 hours. Again, a difference was 10.85 points between those who watched for 1 hour and 2 hours. Conclusion: Among children who spend two or more hours in front of the screen, the gross motor and social development/self-care scores of those who watch their phones are lower than their peers, while it negatively affects the expressive language development of those who watch television. In the age of technology, families should be role models for their children to develop the discipline of using technological devices.
